Editors' Comments

We loved this Toshiba 62" DLP television when it was around, but unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. It looks like the world has moved on to newer TVs, and no merchants are currently selling this model. If you're looking for a DLP TV that's cheap, high-quality, and most importantly, available to buy, you may want to check out the Samsung HL-S6187W, a 61-inch DLP that is our all new pick for best affordable TV over 60-inches.

The Cutting Edge at a Low Price

Don't worry that a low price means you'll be lagging behind people who shelled out big bucks for new technology. The 62HM196 has more versatility than a lot of more expensive flat-panel TVs. Two HDMI inputs provide the highest-quality connections for your DVD players and camcorders, and the set is capable of producing images in 1080i.

What Owners Say

Owners praise the Toshiba 62HM196 up and down. Take a look at some of the gushing user reviews. One writer, a professional video engineer says "I've worked in broadcast television for over 30 years and I could not be happier with the picture quality." We're confident you'll be just as impressed with this excellent deal. Another crucial detail that actual owners have been great resource for can be found in our next paragraph.

Don't Believe Everything You Read

One unfortunate aspect of this TV is the way Toshiba is marketing it. They're calling it a 1080p HDTV. Frankly, this just isn't true. If you look at the specifications included in the manual, you'll see that it's only capable of 1080i connections, and one user claims Toshiba Customer Service told him the 1080p is only available through the over-the-air tuner, which is pointless since there are currently no over-the-air 1080p broadcasts. Ultimately, if you really want 1080p for use with some next-generation media like a Blu-Ray player or PlayStation 3, this is not the right TV for you. Otherwise, this is a perfectly suitable 1080i HDTV, and a great deal.

Specifications

  • 1080i 62" DLP rear-projection TV: Though Toshiba claims that this TV can handle 1080p, many users report that this is not the case. According to actual owners, the true resolution tops out at 1080i, which is perfectly fine, but if you're looking to take advantage of the 1080p signals from HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players or gaming consoles, you may want to look elsewhere.
  • CableCARD Port: Forget the clunky cable box and plug directly into your TV. Requires a special card from your cable company. Great for reducing clutter around your fancy new television.
  • 2 HDMI connections: The absolute best A/V hookup, ensures superior quality pictures from accessories like DVD players and camcorders.
  • 1 Ethernet connection: That's right, you can hook this TV up to your computer network and play audio and video from your personal computer.
  • Two 15 watt speakers: Decent audio for those who don't have a Home Theater setup.
  • Dimensions: 57.1"W x 39.3"H x 18.8"D
  • Weight: 103 pounds
