4 ms on the samsung & 8 on the sony 52w series: how much difference will I see in fast sporting events Etc.. ?

Fast moving sports events are best viewed with LCDs that are rated at 120 hz or above. Since both of them are 120 hz, I think you won't see any appreciable difference at all. Both are outstanding TVs.
