What is the fundamental difference btw the 52" Samsung A650 and the A950, besides price. Is the A950 being phased out?

Well I can tell you the A950 isn't even listed on the Samsung site. There's LN55A950. But not a 52". The first difference you see is the price ... the A950 is more expensive thanks to the larger LCD screen and the greater contrast ratio (100,000:1 vs. 50,000:1 respectively).

There is also an audio difference where the A950 is using an XT version of the sound system, which largely indicates an updated firmware. Is it a main difference, probably not as much as the contrast ratio difference.

The 950 offers next generation backlighting - this is what makes the contrast ratio so much better. The LCD is lit in tiny, independent sections by LEDs instead of one big light. One spot in the screen can turn off while another area remains lit accentuating the contrast in black and white areas. Expensive, yes. Saves electricity - which is great (but not enough at this point to justify the price). Incredible picture and a technological basis on which to brighten and increase contrast on LCD TVs in the future. Only for home theater snobs at this proce point. Cheaper than Sony's line of LED backlit screens, though.
