Editors' Comments
This 63-inch monster from Samsung will completely change the way you watch television. It's an immersive experience at this size, and you'd better have a gigantic living room to support it. It's one of the largest plasma televisions available that isn't completely out of any normal person's price range, provided they're serious about their TV watching and willing to make a significant (roughly $5,000 - $7,000) investment.
The positive aspects of this TV are obvious: it's big. With that size, Samsung has had to work extra hard to make sure the picture looks good; anything less than perfect would be very obvious on such a large display. As such, they've outfitted it with a full 1080p resolution. While we're often very skeptical about whether 1080p is really worth it and whether a consumer would be just fine with a lesser resolution, this is one case where we're pretty sure you'd want it. It's on these gigantic screens that the progressive scan and extra lines of resolution really make a difference. If you're already looking to spend some big money on a 63-inch screen, the resolution question is a moot point.
We also appreciate that Samsung has made this TV Energy Star compliant to make sure it's not jacking up your electric bill by drawing too much power.
It's easy to get starry eyes looking at this thing, but we've got to make sure you're aware of the possible pitfalls as well. It's big, so forget about hiding it in a cabinet. This TV is built for people who want to show it off. Mounting it will be difficult, and should certainly be handled by a professional, which will cost you some more cash. With the stand, the total weight of the unit is 195 pounds. Take a measuring tape and measure your home to make sure this thing will fit. This is a great TV, but only if you've got the environment and the mindset to support it.
