Charles -- I could find no reference to the model you indicated in your question; I'll assume you mean the Panasonic TH-50PX60U 50" Plasma TV compared to the Sony KDS-50A2020 50" Rear Projection.

Based on current pricing, these two models are about the same price. The main thing Sony is charging for in the DLP is 1080p support. I don't care what any technical specification or tech wizard or "videophile" says, to my eyes, and I have looked very, very hard, there is no visible difference between 1080p and 720p or 1080i (the latter two which the Panasonic supports). There's nothing wrong with it, and yes, in 6 months, most TVs will have 1080p, but it is simply not worth spending a penny extra for. DLP TVs should be considerably less expensive than plasma; this one is selling at the same price.

Overall, DLP pictures, while very good can be less brilliant than Plasma (which is a little less brilliant than LCD). The 50" Plasma is a great TV and only 3.7" deep, compared to the 17.6" deep rear projection. Despite their their Trinitron tube technology of the past, which was truly better, Sony hasn't stepped up to the plate on most of their TV offerings, and are "just another player" in this crowded field.

If you really want the 50" TV, by way of comparison you can get the Mitsubishi 65" DLP for around $1,800 or a Samsung 46" Rear-projection DLP for just a little over $1000. Why spend more?

Right now, TV manufacturers know that users are drawn to specs like moths to a flame -- we can't help think we "need" 1080p. Trust me: the best bargain today is a 720p TV of any size, since manufacturers are selling them for a LOT less than the silly 1080p TVs.
