No. You don't need 1080p. Really. At all. It's close to a scam, in my opinion.
It won't hurt, but most TV makers are trying to command a very significant premium for a feature that has very little value; almost none today. First, HDTV broadcasts are mostly in 720p and some in 1080i, so 1080p does nothing to TV for the foreseeable future. HD-DVD or BluRay players will be able to product 1080p, and I think the newest gaming consoles will, too. But the biggest question is: will you ever actually see any difference? To my eyes, no difference. None visible. And this was with a guy saying "look, see how much clearer the picture is" and I am saying "uh, no, I don't see any difference -- not even close up, and this was on a large screen in the size range you are considering.
Save your money and get something like the Panasonic 50" Plasma TH-50PX60U for around $1,700 or the Olevia 42" LCD selling on Amazon today for $799. The same 50" Panasonic in 1080p is around $2,800. That's a lot to pay for very, very little.
