An Excellent Bargain The 42" Toshiba 42Hl67 LCD Television is well suited for providing excellent HD coverage of whatever you watch, and won't cost you an arm and a leg. Toshiba wisely keeps the cost down by eschewing 1080p and going with a more sensible 720p. Such high resolution would be wasted on a TV less that's well under 50-inches, and including it would only serve to increase the overall cost by a few hundred dollars. With LCDs encroaching on the higher size ranges, there are plenty of great deals to be found on plasmas. |

Maybe you're still interested in 1080p. That's fine, to each their own. The 42" LC-42D62U LCD from Sharp is somewhat of a bargain, providing 1080p resolution for only around $1,300. It's also got a super-fast 6ms response time, making it well suited for rendering the crisp green grass of a baseball field. You'll see less jagged edges and blurring. The contrast ratio is adequate, but nothing compared to the plasma TV we've got lined up next. Still, this Sharp LCD is a great combination of our three major criteria: it's affordable, it's from a great brand, and it's got some cutting edge specs. |

Tremendous 15,000:1 Contrast Ratio Panasonic Plasmas are wonderful pieces of machinery, and this 50" display is no exception. The Panasonic TH-50PX75U is another 720p HDTV, but brings with it a stunning 10,000:1 contrast ratio, ensuring well-defined edges and color contrasts. Experts agree that contrast ratio has more of a discernible impact on image quality, and this HDTV certainly has it covered. |
