Sony GPS Enabled Camcorders

These handy gadgets allow you to add geo-tagging capabilities to your home movies. Whether it's useful or not is in the eye of the beholder, but Sony believes there are consumers interested in such technology. Keep in mind: the GPS in these devices is not for navigation, and there are no turn-by-turn directions. At present, they are used only for self-locating and tagging media content with geographical information.

Sony HDR-TG5V

from $794.99
The impressively small Sony HDR-TG5V has managed to fit a GPS receiver within its tiny, titanium body. This full HD 1080p pocket camcorder is slim and sleek, with 16GB of on-board flash memory and the ability to expand the storage capacity with Sony's proprietary MemoryStick cards. The built-in memory alone can hold up to two hours of high-definition video, at best-quality settings. The GPS features allow for geotagging of videos and still photos, and will display your current location on the LCD display.

Sony HDR-XR520V

from $1,069.00
The Sony HDR-XR520V is the "big daddy" of Sony camcorders. It's packed full of outrageously ostentatious features, so Sony figured they may as well throw a GPS receiver in there, too. Like the TG5V, the XR520V's GPS features are limited to geotagging uses, and are not intended for navigation. Still, it's a nice bonus on top of a 240GB hard disk drive, 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD display, and 12.1-megapixel sensor.

Sony GPS-CS3KA

from $99.99
Although it isn't a camcorder, the Sony GPS-CS3KA is a portable GPS device that works in conjunction with most current Sony Handycam models to bring geotagging to devices that are note innately equipped with it. It also works with Sony digital still cameras. Simply use the GPS-CS3KA along with your camera or camcorder, and it will record the exact location of each video or image. It separately logs position data and later syncs it up with your video's meta data, on your computer.
